Getting detention paid: the invoice that works

Detention is earned at the dock but won or lost in the paperwork. A clear invoice with the times and proof attached gets paid far more often.

Brokers pay detention when the request is clear, on time and backed by the rate confirmation terms and proof. Vague requests sent weeks later usually go nowhere.

What the invoice needs

  • The load number and the broker's reference.
  • The facility, the appointment time, the arrival time and the release time.
  • The free time and the hourly rate from the rate confirmation.
  • The billable hours and the total.
  • Attachments: the signed BOL with in and out times, and ELD or GPS records.

Timing

Tell the broker when the free time is about to run out, while the truck is still at the dock, then send the invoice with the load paperwork the same day.

Follow up

Add the detention to your receivables list and follow up with the main invoice. Our detention invoice builder writes the request for you.
