Splitting a utility bill fairly between units or roommates

When one meter serves more than one unit or household, an unclear split causes more arguments than the bill itself. A written method, applied the same way every month, keeps it simple.

Duplexes, garage apartments, shared houses and family properties often have one electric or water meter for more than one household. Someone pays the bill, and everyone else pays them back.

Pick a method and write it down

  • Equal shares: simplest, fair when households are similar.
  • By people: each household pays by the number of people living there.
  • Fixed charge plus usage: the service charge is split evenly, the rest by people.

For rentals, check the lease

An owner can only bill tenants for utilities as the lease allows. Put the method in the lease, and give tenants a copy of each bill with their share.

Same day, every month

Send the shares when the bill arrives, with the due date. A steady routine prevents months of catch-up.

Our utility bill splitter works out each share.
