The hurricane deductible: know your number before the storm

Most Florida homeowners policies have a separate hurricane deductible, usually a percentage of the dwelling coverage. On a typical home it can be thousands of dollars.

Florida homeowners and landlord policies usually carry two deductibles: an all other perils deductible, a flat dollar amount, and a hurricane deductible, commonly 2%, 5% or 10% of the dwelling coverage.

Work out the dollars

A home insured for $400,000 with a 2% hurricane deductible has an $8,000 deductible for hurricane damage. At 5%, it is $20,000.

How it applies

In Florida, the hurricane deductible generally applies once per calendar hurricane season to hurricane losses, rather than once per storm. Read your policy declarations and ask your agent how it applies.

Plan for it

  • Keep the deductible amount in your reserve or emergency fund before hurricane season.
  • Flood damage is usually covered only by a separate flood policy.
  • Photograph the property before the season for any claim.
