Organizing your documents for a small claims case

In small claims, the person with organized, clear documents is easier to follow. Here is how to put yours in order.

Small claims court is designed for people to handle their own cases, often without an attorney. Judges see many cases in a day, so clear, organized evidence matters.

Gather everything

  • Contracts, estimates, invoices and receipts.
  • Texts, emails and letters, printed with dates visible.
  • Photos and videos, with the date each was taken.
  • Proof of payment: bank statements, canceled checks or app records.
  • Any repair estimates or bills that show the amount you are claiming.

Put it in order

Arrange documents by date, number every page, and make a one-page timeline that points to each document. Make extra copies, since the court and the other side may each need one.

Show the math

A simple table adding up the amount you claim, with a document behind every line, makes it easy to follow.

Know the rules

Each court has its own rules, forms, limits and filing fees. The clerk's office and the court's website explain them, and many courts offer self-help resources.
