Tracking shared child expenses with a co-parent

School fees, medical copays, sports and childcare are often split between parents. A simple shared log avoids arguments about who paid what.

Many parenting plans and support orders split certain child expenses by a percentage. Even without an order, parents often agree to share costs. What causes friction is usually not the money but the memory of who paid.

Log every shared cost

  • The date, the child and what it was for.
  • The amount and who paid it.
  • The agreed split.
  • A photo of the receipt.

Settle up on a schedule

Monthly works for most families. Send the log with the total each parent owes the other and settle it.

Follow the order

If a court order sets the split or the process, follow it. A family law attorney can answer questions about the order.

Our shared child expense log keeps the list and figures who owes whom.
