Getting clients to court on time, ready and calm

A client who arrives late, at the wrong courthouse or without what was asked for can set a hearing back. A clear reminder, sent twice, prevents most of it.

For most clients, a court date is rare and stressful. They worry about where to go, what to wear and what to bring. Counsel prepares them on substance. Staff make sure the logistics are clear.

What every reminder should say

  • The date, the time and the time to arrive, usually 30 to 45 minutes early.
  • The courthouse address, the courtroom or floor, and where to park.
  • Whether it is in person or by video, with the link and how to test it.
  • What to bring: identification, documents asked for, glasses, medications.
  • Who to call that morning if something goes wrong.

Send it twice

Send a full reminder about a week ahead, and a short one the day before. Ask the client to reply to confirm.

Interpreters and accessibility

Confirm an interpreter early if the client needs one, and ask about any accessibility needs.
