Logging incoming legal mail the day it arrives

Court orders, discovery and notices often start a deadline the day they are served. A log of everything that comes in, and who it went to, makes sure nothing sits in a pile.

Mail, email service and e-filing notices bring documents that counsel must see quickly. Many start a response clock. Counsel calculates the deadlines; staff make sure every document is logged and routed the same day.

Log each item

  • The date received and how: mail, email service, e-portal, hand delivery.
  • Who it is from and the matter.
  • What it is: order, notice of hearing, discovery, motion, letter.
  • Who it was routed to.
  • Whether counsel set a deadline, and that it was calendared.

Close the loop

At the end of the day, check that every item has been routed and every deadline counsel set is on the calendar.

Our incoming mail log keeps the list and puts deadlines on the back office calendar.
