Weight problems are among the most common and most avoidable violations. They come from two places: too much total weight, or the right total weight in the wrong place.
The basic federal limits
On the Interstate Highway System, the federal limits are 80,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, 20,000 pounds on a single axle and 34,000 pounds on a tandem axle group. The federal bridge formula also limits weight based on the number of axles and the distance between them. States set their own limits on other roads, and permits can allow more in some cases.
Where the weight sits
A heavy load placed too far forward can overload the drive axles even when the gross weight is fine. Sliding the tandems or the fifth wheel shifts weight between axles.
Check before you roll
- Weigh at a certified scale after loading, and keep the ticket.
- Adjust the tandems or fifth wheel, or ask the shipper to reload, if an axle is over.
- Know your empty weight, so you know how much freight you can legally haul.
Our axle weight check compares your scale ticket with the federal limits.
